The MusiMóvil

Somewhere in Montevideo tonight, there is a fair chance a pedal-powered trike with a speaker on its roof is rolling down an avenue trailing a river of bicycles, skateboards and rollerblades. Locals know it on sight: purple body, yellow tube frame, and a ring of neon spinning above it in the shape of an infinity sign. This is the MusiMóvil — and the crowd behind it is what its community calls la manada: the pack.

The MusiMóvil describes itself as a collaborative community for culture on wheels, and the description is precise. It isn't a band, a company or an event promoter. It's a network of people who bring music to self-organized group rides — rodadas — open to anyone with something to roll on. Its motto doubles as a mission statement: may the music never stop rolling.

A short history with a theft in the middle

The project was conceived in August 2020, a response to a city locked down with its culture shuttered, by a crew of artists, makers, DJs and mobility companies. Their first purpose-built music trike, the «Original», hit the street in February 2021 — the date the community still celebrates as its anniversary. That April, it was stolen. The rides continued anyway, on cargo bikes and borrowed carts, until the bike, skate and roller communities of Uruguay pooled resources to build the current trike in September 2021. Its name: «Futuro».

By its own account at the end of 2023, the community counted around ten core collaborators and forty occasional ones, rides two to three times a week drawing 50 to 150 people, and monthly mass rides topping 300.

Rituals of the pack

The calendar has its own liturgy. Monday nights belong to LunesManía — the community calls it its Monday mass — a DJ-led night ride that opens each week. Sundays bring the Atardeceres Rodantes — sunset rides that close the weekend. Around them orbit nostalgia-themed rides, full-moon and fog editions, and the occasional festival: Bicifest took the format to Montevideo's Espacio Modelo in December 2024, in alliance with the city government. Rules written from below

The most remarkable thing about the MusiMóvil may be its code of conduct. The community wrote its own rulebook for riding together, and it reads like a traffic manual drafted from the street up: the pack rides compact — «we are one in traffic» —, regroups at red lights, keeps the left lane clear so cars can pass, and lights itself up with reflectors and helmets. Bring your own tools. Skip the alcohol. No sudden braking. And one line with no fine print: harassment and violence get no quarter here.

Set beside Uruguay's formal cycling rules, the mirror is striking: nearly everything the law demands appears in the pack's code too — kept not by fines but by belonging. The success of the ride, the code says, is everyone's responsibility.

Finding it

There are no tickets and no sign-ups; the rides run on an explicit gift economy. Announcements circulate through the community's channels — @musimovil on Instagram — and the cycling dates through our calendar. Or simply keep an ear open: if a slow bass line comes around your corner under a spinning infinity sign, that's the invitation.
