Flying in with a bike

Montevideo's Carrasco airport is the one that matters. There's a second, Laguna del Sauce near Punta del Este, but its traffic is seasonal and regional — if you're flying from Europe or North America, you're landing at Carrasco, so plan around it.

From Europe, two airlines come in direct from Madrid, and almost any other city reaches Montevideo with a single change, most often in São Paulo. From North America there's a direct Miami run in the southern summer; the rest of the year the steady choice is to connect through Panama. The fare follows the usual logic of long-haul flying. What doesn't — and what deserves more of your attention — is the bike.

Here is the thing to research before you book, because it's where airlines differ most: how each one treats a boxed bicycle. Some carry it as an ordinary piece of checked luggage at no extra cost, as long as it's within your weight and size allowance. Others count it as sports equipment, charge a flat fee — anywhere from modest to steep — and want it declared a day or two ahead. The fees move and the policies get rewritten, so the only reliable step is to read your airline's own bicycle or sports-equipment policy at the time you book, and to call ahead if it asks you to. Two carriers on the same route can differ by a hundred dollars or more on the bike alone.

Most airlines ask for the same preparation: handlebars turned, pedals off, tyres partly deflated, the whole bike in a hard case or a padded bag. A bike shop will box it for you; if you're flying home at the end of a tour, think early about where that box will come from.

Carrasco sits a short drive east of central Montevideo. The usual first move is a taxi into town with the bike still boxed and a build at the hotel — or a build at the airport and a ride in. And if the trip carries on to Buenos Aires, the natural next leg isn't another flight: it's the ferry across the Río de la Plata.
